<p>An unwinding carriage (14) is fed with a fibre web (4). The unwinding carriage (14) is alternatingly displaced so that it lays the web (4) on an output belt (8) driven transversely to the motion of the unwinding carriage (14) so as to make a lap (6) comprised of successive web sections which are inclined alternatingly with respect to the longitudinal direction of the output belt (8), said section being connected by folds defining the edges of the lap (6) obtained. The feed motion of the output belt (8) is maintained during the changes of direction of the unwinding carriage (14). During said changes of direction, the amount of web (4) unwound is limited in order to exert on the fibres between of the output belt (8) and the unwinding carriage (14) a traction tending to orient in parallel to the longitudinal direction of the output belt (8) the fibres forming the folds of the web in the lap (6).
