PURPOSE:To enable smooth vehicle speed control and smooth traveling of a vehicle by selecting control consisting mainly of that of an accelerator when a passage on which the vehicle travels is judged to be an up-grade or flat, and selecting control consisting mainly of that of a brake when the passage is judged to be a down-grade. CONSTITUTION:A traveling controller 1 guides a self-traveling vehicle into traveling along a predetermined travel passage having a gradient. A CPU 2 determines according to the output of an F/R lever position detector 6 whether the vehicle is moving back or forth. It is determined according to the outputs of a vehicle body inclination detector 7 whether the vehicle is inclined forward or backward and whether or not the vehicle is running on a flat road surface. When the result of this judgement shows that the vehicle is traveling on an up-grade or on a flat road surface, traveling control consisting mainly of that of an accelerator is executed, whereas when the result shows that the vehicle is traveling on a down-grade, traveling control preferring that of the brake is executed. Smooth vehicle speed control and stable traveling of the vehicle are thus made possible. |
