The invention provides a process for the manufacture of vat dyes of the formula <IMAGE> (1) , wherein R is alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and X is an acyl radical, which comprises condensing a diaminoanthraquinone of the formula <IMAGE> (2) or mixtures of diaminoanthraquinones of the formula (2), with a 2,4-dihalogeno-6-alkylthio-s-triazine of the formula <IMAGE> (3) wherein Y is halogen and R is as defined for formula (1), in the molar ratio 2:1, and condensing the resulting intermediate of the formula <IMAGE> (4) with an acylating agent containing the acyl radical X which is as defined for formula (1), in the molar ratio 1:2.
