Sulphatobetaines of formula (I) are prepd. by reacting an amine-SO3 adduct of formula (II) with an alkylene carbonate of formula (III). Reaction is at 80-220 deg.C, using an inert solvent and/or an excess of (II) and/or an excess of (III) as solvent. R1, R2 = 1-22C (un)branched satd. alkyl, 5-7C cycloalkyl, phenyl, naphthyl or 7-12C aralkyl; or the R1 gps. and the N form a 5-6 member ring, opt. contg. other heteratoms and opt. with a condensed benzene ring and R2 is 1-4C alkyl; or the R1 gps., R2 and N form a 5-6 member unsatd. ring, opt. contg. other heteroatoms and opt. with a condensed benzene ring; R3 = H or 1-7C alkyl; R4 = H, 1-20C alkyl or phenyl; and R3 and R4 are interchangeable.
