PURPOSE:To surely eliminate misfire by providing an supplemental volume compensating means for reducing the basic fuel injection volume in response to a transfer from a misfire condition into a firing condition. CONSTITUTION:Whether a misfire condition occurs or not is determined in accordance with a negative pressure PB in an air-intake pipe which is detected by a vacuum sensor 74. If the determination of a misfire condition in accordance with the negative pressure PB continues for a predetermined period, or if the determination of a firing condition in accordance with the negative pressure PB is made, the determination of a misfire condition is made in accordance with a pressure in a combustion chamber which is detected by an indicator pressure sensor 72, that is, in accordance with an indicator pressure PI. If the misfire condition is determined, whether the previous determined gives a misfire condition or a firing condition is determined. If the previous determination gives the misfire condition, a misfire and firing compensating coefficient (KMF) is set, and a fuel injection volume TOUT is multiplied by the coefficient KMP so as to set a new fuel infection volume TOUT. Incidentally, the misfire and firing compensating coefficient MMF is updated so as to successively decrease it.
