PURPOSE:To obtain a friction member excellent in frictional and wear characteristics by impregnating and covering the pores and surface of a porous metal layer with a composition consisting of metallic lead and PTFE, followed by baking. CONSTITUTION:The pores and surface of a porous metal layer provided on the surface of a metal backing is impregnated and covered with a composition consisting of 5-30vol.% metallic lead in the form of particles having such a mean particle diameter as to provide a specific surface of 1,000-8,500cm<2>/g and the balance of PTFE, which is baked in a neutral or reducing atmosphere to give an objective friction member. lf the specific surface is below 1,000cm<2>/g, the friction member will not be different in friction and wear from the conventional one; if above 8,500cm<2>/g, the industrial manufacture of the metal powder will be difficult. If the amount of the metallic lead added is above 30vol.%, an improvement in wear resistance can hardly be obtained because of the brittleness of the material; if below 5vol.%, necessary frictional and wear characteristics cannot be ensured. |
