PURPOSE:To easily and inexpensively convert the surface-layer part of a silicon carbide porous body into a rigid impermeable layer and to improve the strength of the part by filling the pores in the part with a sintered mixture contg. a silicon carbide calcined body of the same material as a substrate. CONSTITUTION:A paste obtained by dispersing the silicon carbide fine particles having a diameter of 1/10-1/100 times the diameter of a pore 1a in a resin is applied on the surface of the silicon carbide porous body 1 having the three- dimensional pores 1a to fill the pores 1a, and further metallic silicon is placed thereon and heated above the m.p. of metallic silicon. Consequently, the pore in the surface layer of the porous body 1 is filled with the calcined mixture 3 contg. a silicon carbide calcined body obtained by the reaction of the metallic silicon with the carbide carbon of the resin in the paste, silicon carbide fine particles in the paste and unreacted metallic silicon. The mixing ratio of the silicon carbide fine particles to resin in the paste is preferably controlled to(2:1)-(2:3). |
