In a method and apparatus for driving the wheels of a road-building machine, preferably a road-paving finisher, having a rear-wheel main drive and a front-wheel drive separate therefrom, and having a trough for receiving and carrying along the paving construction material to be laid on a formation level, provision is made for the speeds of rear wheel and front wheel to be recorded by means of a measuring device and compared with one another, for a control signal to be generated in the event of a difference in speed, and for the control signal to be used to switch on the front-wheel drive. At the same time, the power of the drive of the front wheels can be regulated as a function of the axial load on the front wheels in that the loading state of the trough is scanned and signals obtained from the scan are converted into control pulses for an output regulation.
