A filter for a gas producer includes at least one curved wire such as a wave-shaped or spiral wire having a wire diameter of 0.1-1.5 mm and has a bulk specific gravity of 1.0-3.0. A method of producing a filter for a gas producer has steps of forming a wave-shaped or helical wire into an annular laminate by supplying the wire into a space of a die assembly and compressing it to form a filter. In supplying the wire into the die assembly, a curved wire may be wound about a rotating body to obtain an annular laminate or a curved wire is uniformly laminated on a flat plate and compressed into a sheet-like member which is wound upon itself. In compressing the laminate, it may be compressed halfway to obtain a primary formed product and curved wire separately prepared as binding wires are wound around sections of the primary formed product which is then finally compressed. A laminate compressed halfway may be further compressed by a die assembly having longitudinal grooves and longitudinal ridges to be fitted with each other to form a filter having longitudinal grooves.
