The water pump has a bladed impeller (17) fixed to the end of a shaft (14) in a bearing (13) in the housing (11). There is a mechanical seal (18) between impeller and bearing. A chamber (19) between seal and bearing has a drain hole (22) for steam and condensate which has penetrated past the seal, leading to a collector chamber (22a) formed in the housing below. A plug (23) fits in a lateral opening in this chamber, an overflow drilling (24) being formed in the housing at the top of it. ADVANTAGE - Protects other components from leaking anti-freeze solution, particularly in an automitive engine.
