The contact lens is packaged with aqueous storage liquid, and sterilised by autoclaving or irradiation, within a propylene polymer container comprising a base (51) within which the lens has been cast, and to which a lid (80) is hermetically sealed after the lens has been hydrated within the base. The lid (80) is sealed by ultrasonically welding to the base (51) at a rib (83), the ultrasonic welding acting to disperse liquid from the weld area. The lid (80) is provided with a tear-off peg (81) enabling the lid to be removed at a weakening groove (82).
