An electromagnetically operable contactor, especially a small contactor (miniature contactor) having a DC drive which contains a contactor coil, has connected upstream of it a rectifier arrangement, preferably a rectifier diode arrangement, for connection to an AC mains power supply. A resistor is also connected to the rectifier arrangement, in order to protect said rectifier arrangement against overvoltages. This contactor is distinguished by the fact that the resistor, which is used for protection against overvoltages, is constructed as a coil (RS5; RS6) having a low resistance value. This coil can be constructed as an additional winding on the contactor coil (S7; S8) and can be suitably connected to the rectifier arrangement (D7, FD7; D8, FD8) by means of separate taps (A7; A8). Such a coil can favourably influence the switching characteristic, and thus the contactor operation. <IMAGE>
