In order to produce a device for mounting safety belts in motor vehicles beneath the rear window shelf or the like, an automatic belt retractor being mounted beneath the rear window shelf so as to be fixed to the frame and the safety belt being guided through the rear window shelf to a further fixed point in the region of the rear seat and being capable of being coupled to a belt lock, in order to make vertical adjustment of the upper deflection point of the safety belt possible when the safety belt passes through the rear window shelf, it is proposed that a sliding rod (1) be arranged which passes through the rear window shelf (12) and has a guide for the belt (4) and that the sliding rod (1) be vertically adjustable with respect to the rear window shelf surface. <IMAGE>
