Two gaps (41,42) between point electrodes (35,36;37,38) are arranged in series between the protected wire (20) and earth (40). The unprotected wire (10) is connected to the junction (43) of the two gaps and of a delaying resistance (34) in parallel with the gap (41) connected directly to the protected wire and earthed load (Z). The heavy charge of a nuclear e.m pulse is dissipated by gas discharge in the earthed gap (42), while the other gap (41) is pre-ionised so as to conduct away the residual voltage pulse delayed by the ionisation time. This reduces the peak voltage of the residual pulse at the protected wire (20). USE/ADVANTAGE - Protection of electronic equipment against nuclear e.m pulses or lightning discharges or other over-voltages. USE/ADVANTAGE - Peak voltage is only a submultiple of 2 kV,.
