In an embodiment, the tensioning arrangement comprises an axially non-displaceable piston 10 fastened to a fixed point on the engine, with two piston surfaces 20, 21 which are oriented in opposite directions and, together with a piston housing 15 arranged around the piston 10, delimit two working chambers 22, 23. The piston housing 15 is fastened to the free end 6 of the lever 2 and has two inlets 30, 31, through which pressure oil is conducted to the two working chambers 22, 23 which are furthermore interconnected via a narrow throttle passage 25 in the piston 10. The narrow throttle piston 25 means that only relatively long unilateral action on the piston housing 15 in relation to the piston 10 will bring about a displacement of the central position of these elements relative to one another. At the same time, the narrow throttle passage 25 brings about effective damping of rapid vibration effects. In this way, automatic continuous tightening of the transmission chain is achieved, in such a manner that retightening the chain becomes superfluous. <IMAGE>
