Remote-controlled shears for cutting up irradiated nuclear fuel rods into segments with a moving shear blade (1) having a cutting edge (18) roughly at right angles to the axis of the rod or rod bundle, and a bushing (2, 3) which is divided into two parts and holds blade (1) with the shear blade slide-mounted in it. Furthermore, it has an infeed device for the rods (12) whose location holes (9) match the shape of the rod, and which are aligned with cutting openings (11) in the cutting blade during cutting, and an opening (10) for the segments cut off to drop out of, opposite the cutting openings (9, 11). The drive unit that operates the shear blade (1) consists of an electrical direct drive with a rotor and stator, the rotor (21) being mounted directly on the shear blade (1), which can rotate perpendicularly to the rods and forms the central part of the rotor, and the stator (6) being designed as part of the shear block (4, 5) surrounding it. <IMAGE>
