PURPOSE:To enhance the accuracy of a printing-starting position, by decelerating a carriage at the time of turning ON a detecting switch so as to determine a reference position for initilizing a printer. CONSTITUTION:First, a carriage 4 is moved at a normal velocity to press a contact part 10, thereby once turning ON a switch 9. In this condition, the carriage 4 is moved in the opposite direction, namely, in the direction for turning OFF the switch 9. Then, the velocity of the carriage is controlled to a low value, the switch 9 is again turned ON by the carriage 4, and the position corresponding to the turning-ON is made to be a reference position for initialization. By this initializing method for a printer, the velocity of the carriage at the time of turning ON the switch can be controlled to a low value, whereby the reference position for initialization is stabilized, so that the printing- starting positions are aligned for each line, and accuracy of the printing-starting position is enhanced.
