For fastening shelves (7), ledges or the like on room ceilings (6) or work surfaces (10), the invention provides a load-bearing retaining means which comprises one or more interconnected load-bearing rods (8) and spacers (9) which are each arranged between two shelves (7), on the one hand, and the room ceiling (6) or the work surface (10) and a shelf (7), on the other hand. The spacers (9) are configured such that they can be plugged onto the load-bearing rods (8), which are guided in bores (11) of the shelves and are fastened on the rack (4), and they can be shortened in length in the same way as the load-bearing rods (8). This makes it possible to mount, in a simple and positionally fixed manner, racks (4) or shelves (7) such that they are freely suspended or self-supporting, the alignment of the rack being simplified considerably. <IMAGE>
