The workpiece is processed under numerical control by in putting first data representing the shape of the workpiece before processing. The first data is compared with further data representing a desired working path of a tool as determined on the basis of a desired finished shape of the workpiece. This determines whether the tool is outside or inside the desired finished shaped when it is on the working path. The tool is moved at a relatively high speed when the tool is outside the shape, thus reducing the time wasted due to non- working movement of the tool. Both the first data and further data are pref. inputted as information representing the form of line segments and/or circular arcs.
