The excavating machine of tractor type design which can be equipped with e.g a bucket, has a frame at the rear with horizontal and vertical members, to enable the excavating mechanism to be attached. This frame can be quickly connected and released by a locking device operated by swinging a handle (14) to one side. The handle is attached to a pivot spindle with a double ended lever attached. This forms part of an operating linkage with a locking pin (10,11) at each end. Each pin is pushed horizontally into a fixed sleeve (12,13) on the vehicle when the handle is swung into the locking position. An asphalt cutting tool can be secured for use with the bucket for e.g road repairs.
