In a fireplace insert (1), a chamber (6) is arranged under the grate (3). For improved ash removal and to avoid impairment of the base cladding, this chamber (6) is widened at the front to such an extent that the ash box (12) in front of the combustion chamber (2) can be pulled out upwards. The widened part of the chamber (6) is provided with an upper opening (10) which can be closed by an adjustable ventilation grid (11). The oblique front wall (9) forms a slide during pulling-out and insertion of the ash box (12), which is equipped with runners (13) and a gripping arm (14). <IMAGE>
