PURPOSE:To prevent the damage of a magnetic tape by recording and reproducing information signals in a prescibed unit period while the magnetic tape is in a running state. CONSTITUTION:For recording a still picture, an operation is set in a reproduction mode, and a rotary magnetic head sequentially reproduces and scans recording tracks P1-P8 with respect to a track group 20. Then, the operation is switched to the recording mode, a control voltage by the tracking signals reproduced from the tracks P1-P8 is held, and the tracking is controlled. Only the tracking signals are recorded and tracks P9 and P10 are formed. Address signals and the tracking signals are supplied to the head, and tracks T1 and T2 are formed. Still picture signals and the tracking signals are recorded in a track group 21 and only tracking signals are recorded in the tracks P1-P8. Then, the magnetic tape 1 runs reversely, and the head is positioned on the tracks P1-P8 just formed.
