PURPOSE:To contrive effective use of an ink ribbon, by detecting a consumed state of the ink ribbon and controlling the number of times of overlap printing according to the consumed state. CONSTITUTION:When the consumption of an ink ribbon 3 progresses due to use, the level of a detection signal from a detecting part 4 is increased, and when the level exceeds a threshold preset in a control signal generating part 5, an instruction signal for double overlap printing is generated by the part 5. In response to the instruction signal, a printing-controlling part 1 controls a printing part 2 to perform double overlap printing in the same line. The level of the detection signal from the detecting part 4 is further increased as the consumption of the ink ribbon further progresses. Where a plurality of thresholds are set in the part 5, the level of the detection signal sequentially exceeds the thresholds as it is increased, and each time the level exceeds on of the thresholds, an instruction signal for triple overlap printing, quadruple overlap printing or the like is outputted from the part 5 to the printing- controlling part 1. Accordingly, a certain degree of uniformity of printed density can be maintained, and the ink ribbon can be efficiently used.
