NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R1 is 3C or 4C straight- chain alkyl; R2 is 4-5C straight-chain alkyl when R1 is 3C straight-chain alkyl and 1C or 3-7C straight-chain alkyl when R1 is 5C straight-chain alkyl). EXAMPLE:4-Methoxy-(trans-4'-n-pentylhexyl)-benzene. USE:A stable liquid crystal compound, useful as a material for liquid crystal compositions used in various electrooptical display elements and having particularly low viscosity and improved solubility and small n value. PREPARATION:A trans isomer of a compound expressed by formula II is passed through trans isomers expressed by formulas III-IV and converted into a trans isomer expressed by formula V in two steps by a well-known method. The resultant isomer expressed by formula V is then converted into a trans isomer expressed by formula VI and condensed with an alkyl halide to afford the aimed trans isomer expressed by formula I'.
