PURPOSE:To prevent an automobile from starting at an ascent, by preventing the automobile from moving back in making the reversion of a turning wheel checkable by an inhibiting member, while making engagement of the inhibiting member to the turning wheel releasable by a releasing device, at the time of starting the automobile in ascending a hill. CONSTITUTION:A countershaft (jackshaft) 6 is connected, via a speed gear group 5, to the input shaft 4 connected to a crankshaft 2 of an engine via a clutch mechanism 3, and an output shaft 8 is connected to the countershaft 6 via a reduction gear 7. And, rotation of the output shaft 8 is transmitted to front wheels 9 via a final reduction gear 11 and a front differential 10 or the like, and also to rear wheels 17 via a bevel gear 15 and a rear differential 18 or the like, respectively. In this structure, a ratchet wheel 21 as a turning wheel is locked to the output shaft 8, while a ratchet 22 as a inhibiting member is installed in this ratchet wheel free of engagement. And, this ratchet 22 is made so as to be able to release the engagement with the ratchet wheel 21 by operation of a cable 23 as a releasing device.
