The invention relates to a process and a smelting furnace for producing non-ferrous metals by smelting raw materials containing non-ferrous metals. In known processes, sulphide concentrates, in particular, are charged with oxygen into the atmosphere above the melt and distributed uniformly over the surface of the melt. The rate of reaction of the sulphide concentrates is very low as a result of retention in the slag layer, and to obtain large quantities of non-ferrous metals, high-volume smelting units which represent a costly investment and are expensive to operate are required. The invention overcomes the disadvantages of the prior art, by directly injecting the reactants, at least partially, by means of one or more nozzles (jets) in the bottom and/or sides, into a bottom phase containing, or consisting of, non-ferrous metal.
