A fuel injection pump is proposed in which, for quiet running in the low speed range of the internal combustion engine, a proportion of the amount of fuel delivered is diverted in order to prolong the injection period. For this purpose, the fuel injection pump has a quiet-idle device (20) with a receiving chamber (24) defined by a spring-loaded piston (21), which chamber each time stores a proportion of the fuel diverted from the amount of fuel delivered by the pump piston (4) of the injection pump. In order to block the fuel feed into the receiving chamber as the speed of the internal combustion engine increases, a slide valve (44, 45) is connected into the inlet to the receiving chamber, the slide (44) of which valve is actuated by a pressure cell (50), which is acted upon by the speed-dependent pressure in the intake chamber of the injection pump. <IMAGE>
