Catalytic method for transforming sulphur dioxide into sulphur trioxide is described in which vanadium pentoxide catalyst are in the form of cylindrical or prismatic solid or hollow elements. The hollow shapes can be grooved on the outside and opt. also on the inside. The size of the grooves is pref. designed to prevent or minimise interlocking of the shapes. The catalyst pref. contains 4-25% Ni. It has an outer dia. of 3-20 mm, a height; dia. ratio of 0.3-3.0, the outer grooves of 3-18, a depth of outer groove; dia. ratio of 0.05- 0.5.
