The optical-to-electrical transducer used in this receiver is a PIN-positive-intrinsic-negative-diode. When no signal is present, the diode is reverse-biased, but becomes forward-biased when a light signal is received. This form of biasing reduces the problem of d.c. current saturation caused by high light power levels. The receiver can operate at data rates of 140 Mbit per second. It requires d.c. power supplies of +12v,-12v and -20v, and contains two operational amplifiers, a 200Hz oscillator, a level detector and a smoothing circuit.
|
