PURPOSE:To achieve stable and excellent quality with reduced fluctuation of discharge characteristic by employing zinc-lead-aluminum-indium-mercury alloy powder where indium and mercury are added onto the surface of zinc alloy powder containing lead and aluminum as the negative electrode active material. CONSTITUTION:Zinc is added with lead and aluminum to produce an alloy which is powdered then gelatinized with indium-mercury alloy or indium is deposited on the surface of zinc alloy powder thereafter gelatinized with mercury to produce zinc-lead-aluminum-indium-mercury alloy powder which is employed as the negative electrode active material. When adding indium together with mercury onto the surface of zinc, indium will function to fix mercury onto the surface of zinc or the crystal grain field and since it will function directly from the surface of zinc, the performance is improved, resulting in reduction of adding quantity.
