PURPOSE:To provide Bacteroides sp.No.671 which is a bacillus separable from soil, belonging to Bacteroides genus, preliferative with carbon dioxide and hydrogen to produce acetic acid, having acidic pH range for growth, and incapable of assimilating ribose. CONSTITUTION:The novel bacillus, Bacteroides sp.No.671 (FERM-P 8048) is a Gram-negative anaerobic asporogenic bacillus having a width of 1.1-1.4mum and a length of 6-10mum, proliferative with carbon dioxide and hydrogen to accumulate acetic acid in the medium, having a growth pH range of 4-7, incapable of assimilating ribose, capable of assimilating glucose, fructose, etc. and producing butyric acid, isovaleric acid, succinic acid, etc. in addition to acetic acid. It is necessary to prevent the intrusion of oxygen in the cultivation of the strain. Since the microbial strain can be cultured by using carbon dioxide gas, sodium bicarbonate, etc. as the carbon source, it is advantageous for the production of acetic acid on industrial scale. |
