PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for high-resistant polymers, a raw material for plasticizers, etc. easily in high yield without problems of life of catalyst, by oxidizing durene with air in a liquid phase under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:As durene and a molecular oxygen-containing gas are continuously fed to a reactor by using a catalytic system consisting of a heavy metal compound and a bromine compound as a catalyst in an acetic acid solvent, durene is oxidized at 90-200 deg.C, preferably at 110-180 deg.C at 1-50atm., especially 5-40atm. A solid oxidation product separated from the prepared reaction solution is oxidized again with 2-6 times as much about 10-50wt% aqueous solution of nitric acid as the oxidation product by weight at 150-200 deg.C, especially at 170-190 deg.C, to give the aimed compound. |
