In a method for monitoring the filling level in barrels, especially in beer barrels with a barrel fitting which remains in the bottom of the barrel and has automatically closing valves for passage apertures and with an ascending pipe which projects into the barrel and extends close to the barrel bottom, once a cold liquid has been poured into a barrel which has previously been heated during cleaning, the temperature of the barrel exterior in the region of the filling level is measured and, when a presettable desired temperature has been reached which is below the temperature of the barrel exterior produced during cleaning, the barrel is released as properly filled, whereas if the desired temperature is not reached, indication that the barrel has not been filled sufficiently is given and the barrel is treated separately. <IMAGE>
