PURPOSE:To obtain the titled insulated wire which can be thickly coated and has an insulating layer excellent in the rate of heat distortion, tensile strength and elongation, by adding a silanol condensation catalyst to a specified silane- grafted PE and extrusion-coating a conductor with this mixture. CONSTITUTION:Silane-modified PE is obtained by reacting 100pts.wt. low-pressure process low-density PE produced by using a Ziegler catalyst with 0.5- 5pts.wt. organosilane of the formula (wherein R is a monovalent olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon or hydrocarbonoxy group, Y is a hydrolyzable organic group, R' is a monovalent hydrocarbon group other than aliphatic unsaturated hydrocarbon groups, H or group Y) and 0.01-0.5pts.wt. free-radical generator (e.g., dicumyl peroxide). This silane-grafted PE is mixed with 0.025-0.25pts.wt. silanol condensation catalyst (e.g., dibutyltin dilaurate) and extruded from an extruder at 160-250 deg.C around a conductor to obtain the titled insulated wire coated with crosslinked PE of a gel content >=70% and the rate of heat distortion <=40%.
