An outlet 17 which directs gas to swirl in the combustion chamber 11 is connected by a passage 30, 31 to the carburettor 2 upstream of the throttle valve 4 and by a passage 20, 32 to the engine exhaust passage 21. Valves 24, 35 responsive to intake passage vacuum may control flow to the outlet 17. The valve 24 may be controlled in response to other engine operating conditions.
