PURPOSE:To produce the titled expandable resin particles at low cost, by allowing low-MW styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer resin particles suspended in water to adsorb a vinylaromatic monomer and a specified bifunctional monomer and impregnating the resin particles with a blowing agent. CONSTITUTION:At least 20pts.wt. styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer particles (maleic anhydride component of 20-30wt% and an average degree of polymerization of 10-250) are dispersed in an aqueous medium, and 79-32pts.wt. vinylaromatic monomer (e.g., styrene), 1-18wt% bifunctional monomer of the formula: RX (wherein X is a functional group reactive with a dicarbonyloxo group, and R is an aliphatic residue having one double bond), e.g., allyl glycidyl ether, and a polymerization catalyst are added to the resulting suspension, infiltrated into the polymer particles and polymerized. About 3-40wt%, based on the above copolymer, normally vaporous or liquid blowing agent (e.g., propane) is added and infiltrated into the resulting particles to form expandable resin particles.
