PURPOSE:To improve the reading accuracy of a character reader by providing a selector to select plural TV cameras which image pick up the character patterns of an article giving the photoelectric transducing to the picture signal image picked up by the TV camera and reading a character pattern out of a picture memory to display the character pattern. CONSTITUTION:A selector 3 which selects TV cameras 2A and 2B is connected to an article identifier 1 incorporating an optical sensor. These cameras image pick up the character patterns of the articles 6 and 7 which are carried on a belt conveyor 8. The character patterns image picked up by the cameras 2A and 2B are stored to a picture memory 4 by the selector 3. The reading signal sent from a character reader 5 is supplied to the memory 4 through a signal line 9. Then the character pattern is read out of the memory 4. Thus the reading accuracy is increased for the character pattern.
