The invention relates to an accumulator (1) having at least one positive and one negative electrode (2, 3), which are arranged inside a housing (5) and are surrounded on all sides by a liquid electrolyte (4), in particular dilute sulphuric acid. According to the invention, the accumulator (1) has at least one open ignition source (11) in the interior of the housing (5). The hydrogen/oxygen mixture formed during operation of the accumulator (1) is converted directly to water by means of this open ignition source (11). The result is that the quantity of hydrogen being formed is always below the critical concentration. <IMAGE>
