Sintered tungsten carbide compsn. with high transverse rupture strength. This is suitable for cutting and working steel and is made by (a) preparing W powder in a reactor gas-phase by reduction of W halide with a reducing gas consisting mainly of H2, where reducing gas and metal halide are mixed before entry to reactor and heated above reaction temp., (b) carburising W powder and (c) sintering together with binding metal and opt. other carbide metal cpds. Pref. WC for sintering has 1, particularly 0.5, mu m particle size. Pref. Fe, Ni or Co or their alloys with one another, are used as binding metals in amounts of 2-30 wt.% per wt. of sintered carbide metal.
