The appts. is submerged on a line, wire or similar. It comprises a holder body (2,3,4), the lower part of which incorporates at least one horizontal support surface (2) for location against the sediment to be studied, at least one vertical measuring rod (5) movable fitted lengthways in the holder body, and stop and release components (10,12,18,19). These latter components are connected to the submergible line so that when the appts. through its weight loads the line, they fix the measurement rod (5) in the holder body, and when the line is not loaded, they release the rod allowing it to move freely longitudinally in the holder body.
