In a remote control system for controlling power-consuming units, these power-consuming units are connected to power distribution circuits of a building. A central controller is provided which includes a first and a second computer. The computers supply first or second coded signals to identify connection addresses and to effect connection operations. The command signals indicate the addresses allocated to the individual power-consuming units and their respective operating procedures at the respective time, which can be effected both manually and automatically. Building code identification means are furthermore provided, and also an output modulator to which the first and second coded signals are supplied in order to modulate them and feed them to the power distribution circuits, and to control the power-consuming units.
