The appts. has a chassis carried by one or more fixed floats and able to rise and fall vertically along a column fixed to the sea bed. The chassis carries two pivoted arms perpendicular to the fixed floats and having floats at their ends. The geometry of the arrangement is such that the floats on the pivoted arms roll on the cress of the wave when the floats fixed to the chassis are in the wave trough (and vice versa). The fixed column is formed as a cylindrical rack, and the chassis has wheels meshing with the rack, so that the motion of the chassis rotates these wheels, driving a hydraulic motor. All pivoted joints have double acting hydraulic cylinders fitted and the hydraulic pressure is used to supplement the main hydraulic motor which is used to drive an electric generator.
