Residual carbon in particulate pyrolyzed solids such as crushed oil shale is burned by combusting a separate fine fraction of the pyrolyzed solids in a first dilute phase combustion zone 104 and then mixing it with a separate coarse fraction of the pyrolyzed solids in a second dilute phase combustion zone 114. The coarse fraction may also be partially burned in a further dilute phase combustion zone prior to being mixed with the fine fraction, Figure 4 (not shown). A combustion device for this purpose is disclosed. <IMAGE> |
