In the case of a process and an apparatus for the automatic splicing or joining of films, a preceding used film and a following fed-in film are arranged in a line, the rear film end and the front film end being partially overlapped, whereupon the overlapped rear end of the preceding film and the front end of the following film are then diverted by bending out in the same direction and the films severed at the overlapped part; a separate thin joining piece having a thickness of about 50-80 microns is tacked onto the separating part over the two films, in order thereby to join the films with film ends butting against each other.
