Valve timing system for IC engine - uses linear motors controlled by signals from microprocessor via amplifiers

The system uses microprocessor control for i.c. engines, and the versatility which it gives for optimising operation, to the control and timing of the inlet and exhaust valves. The cam shaft and the associated drives are eliminated, and the valves (1,2) operated by individual linear motors (3,4). Each motor receives open and close signals from the microprocessor (5) via suitable power amplifiers. The processor determines the optimum valve timing and valve opening distance from a series of input signals (6-9). These typically include engine speed, engine load, exhaust gas composition, and fuel quantity to be admitted. For aircraft engines an altitude signal is also included.
