PURPOSE:To form a halftone image with high halftone quality and halftone gradation by adding an alkali-unstable hydrazine compound to a silver halide emulsion and a hydrazine compound which is unstable in the emulsion to an alkaline aqueous activator soln. CONSTITUTION:To the silver halide emulsion layer of a silver halide photographic material are added a hydroquinone developing agent and an alkali-unstable hydrazine compound represented by formula I (where R<1> is aryl or alkyl and R<2> is H, aryl or alkyl), and imagewise exposure is carried out. The exposed material is then processed with an aqueous activator soln. of >=11.5pH contg. a hydrazine compound which is unstable in the silver halide emulsion, stable to alkali and represented by formula II (where R<3> is H or lower alkyl and R<4> is H, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, alkoxycarbonyl or the like). Thus, a high-contrast negative image is formed. |
