The rotating bowl coal crusher comprises a bowl (1) rotating about its axis and shaped into a trough section with flat bottom and sloping straight sides (3). A truncated cone (4) is mounted to run in contact with the outer rim (3) of the bowl, and is mounted on a pivoted (5) lever (4A) which can by the action of a hydraulic cylinder (8) and piston (9) be moved to increase the crushing effort of the cone on the bowl rim. The law of variation of crushing pressure is one giving optimum power absorption. A suction transducer (42) and speed transducer for the bowl (40) are additional inputs to a control system (18) and if the bowl becomes overloaded a servomotor (44) is activated to release the pressure on the roller and to allow crushed coal to be removed from the bowl.
