Treating swimming pool water with bromine - formed from alkali metal bromide and mineral peroxide cpd.

The process comprises introducing a large excess of alkali metal bromide from which bromine is liberated by reaction with a mineral peroxide added as required. Pref. reactants are Na, Br or KBr and monopersulphuric acid or salts thereof esp. the K salt in the form of a mixed salt with KHSO4 and K2SO4. The use of bromine avoids the disadvantage of chlorine smell in hypochloride treatment. The process is easily effected and in using an oxygen releasing agent, instead of hypochlorite or cyanuric chloride, avoids chlorine formation.
