Thienamycin of the structural formula I or its isomer called compound 890 A1 or 890 A3 is contacted with an amidohydrolase which is able to hydrolyse the N-acetyl group. The process for the preparation of the antibiotic thienamycin also makes it possible to prepare the antibiotics deacetyl-890 A1 and deacetyl-890 A3. These antibiotics have a very broad spectrum of action and are highly effective against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive microorganisms. They are suitable for use in human and veterinary medicine and for industrial purposes.
