PURPOSE:To prepare highly pure hydroquinone, by oxidizing p-isopropenylphenol with an oxidizing agent in a solvent in the presence of a strong acid, separating the reaction mixture into a solvent layer and a water layer containing the strong acid, and extracting the solvent layer with hot water to eliminate the impurities. CONSTITUTION:p-Isopropenylphenol is oxidized with H2O2 or an organic peroxide, e.g. compounds expressed by the formula (R1-R3 are alkyl or aryl), etc., in a polar solvent having a low water-solubility and a high boiling point, e.g. octanol, etc., preferably at 30-45 deg.C in the presence of a strong acid. The reaction mixture is separated into a water layer containing the strong acid and a solvent layer. The high boiling point polar solvent layer is extracted with hot water of 50-80 deg.C, preferably 60-70 deg.C to eliminate the impurities. The purified layer is e.g. distilled to remove acetone and concentrated, and hydroquinone having a purity of as high as >=98% can be prepared.
